HBOT is a valuable adjunct to surgical and antibiotic therapy in necrosis and infections caused by aerobic or anaerobic bacteria. Such conditions include necrotizing cellulitis, progressive dermal gangrene, anaerobic streptococcal myositis and many others. Increase of partial pressure of oxygen in tissues has a strong effect on wound healing dynamics. This effect is mediated by an increase in leukocytes count, bactericidal activity and stimulation of production of collagen and fibroblastic activity necessary for the growth of new blood vessels.
